*Raven* "I feel like cooking tonight, but I'm not sure what to get as I shop around the local market in the French Quarter of New Orleans. The city has a diverse population, and everyone seems to get along well, except for the occasional dispute. New Orleans is a lively city that keeps its residents well entertained, from Mardi Gras to Jazz Fest, the French Quarter to the Superdome. It's one of the oldest cities in the state and has a rich history, from vampires to voodoo queens, and Cajuns are well known for their southern charm. After deciding on a Seafood Creole Gumbo, I returned home with my grocery bags.

I could tell, immediately, that I was going to love it there. Evan had booked a room at a bed and breakfast that was run by one of his fellow vampires. I was a bit nervous to stay there, at first, but he assured me that he was good friends with the proprietor and that I would be safe.

I say at last, deciding on the truth, albeit a vague version of it. “Ah, the most intriguing kind of business,” he muses, leaning back in his seat, his eyes never leaving mine. “New Orleans is certainly the place for that; a city where the past and present blur, where secrets hide in plain sight. I hope the city reveals what you’re searching for.” I tilt my head, caught off guard by his words. “You make it sound like you know the place.” He offers a noncommittal shrug, the hint of a secretive smile playing on his lips. “Let’s just say I’ve had my fair share of adventures there.”

Jeannine had a sudden urge to pee as she held her briefcase close. “Let this be a lesson to you, little plaçage,” said the cabbie. “Take nothing at face value. Remember this. You will be in N’Orleans soon enough. The waters will speak to you, if you pay attention. The trees and the creatures will flatter you with lies. But hidden among those lies are whispers of truth. Listen to the whispers of the bayou, and you might just make it out alive.” The cabbie removed his hat, revealing two round wounds, one above each eye socket, filled with maggots.

She said. "Oh okay, why do you need the library? I can order you any book and you can just read at home." I said. "I need to do some research and we are not going to get the kind of books I want in an ordinary library." She said . "Why not?" I asked her. "Because I want spell books and diaries, I can only find those in New Orleans, there's a witch I know who is going to let me raid her grandmother's library. " She said .

I’m so used to the lighter garden-y fare in California, I’d forgotten how wickedly rich French food can be. Across from her, Andrew’s brows drew together in consternation. “At some point when all this mess is settled, I’ll have to take you to New Orleans. It’s a city of carnal delights, beginning with the first bite of food you put in your mouth.” Evelyn laughed at his expression. “I can read that sin-filled nostalgia on your face from here. What kind of trouble were you into in New Orleans?” “Steamboat,” he replied, but offered no further details. “Some day I’ll take you on one, then you’ll understand.”

Helen had promised her friend would know what to do, and it’s not like I have any other options. I peer out the passenger side window of the car as Helen pulls into the driveway of an old stately home. We’re in the suburbs of New Orleans, a part I’ve never been before.
