What if? I groan internally. This is exactly why I don’t like going out—because my brain just refuses to let things be simple. No, it has to make everything seem like a conspiracy. After a while, I get lost in the pages of my book, trying to drown out the worries gnawing at me, but then, of course, something shifts. The world around me feels... off. It’s too still. Too normal. Yesterday, it felt like I was living in some high-stakes thriller. Everyone in that room—everyone—was glaring at each other, like the slightest wrong move would set off an explosion. Maybe a purge. Who knows? Definitely not the kind of vibe I want to relive.

The Book of Curse, with its foreboding aura, seemed to cast a spectral presence in the recesses of her mind. The old journal, now placed on the nightstand, carried the weight of its uncanny resemblance to the haunting images from her nightmares. Jette closed her eyes, hoping that sleep would offer respite from the disquieting thoughts that lingered. He asks and I chuckle. "This book is about a war between dragons and shit. It's not like a cook book or a knitting class." I say, chewing on some ice as I type up the description online. "Stop chewing on ice, you're gonna ruin your teeth." Jack barks through the phone, but I ignore him. "Yes or no? I'm sure Mrs. B would just give us the books. You're the one who was bitching that we need to try new things." I say and he groans a little, obviously annoyed by me.

It was a moment of pure, unadulterated emotion. I picked up a book, hoping it would help calm my mind. As I opened the cover, I found myself drawn into the world of the story. The pages seemed to fly by, and before I knew it, hours had passed. I was lost in the pages of the book, transported to another place and time. It was a welcome escape from the chaos of my thoughts.

Nanny Rita said it contains some cute stuff from her high school days – a phase in her life that brought her so much trauma. She breathed deep before opening the bag. It contains old slum books and a diary with broken lock. She smirked thinking that her mother could have forced to open it. "Sure thing! Just wait a moment, I'll weigh them for you." Soon, in the hustle and bustle of daily transactions, I pushed all those memories to the back of my mind. Victoria was just an irrelevant person now. What mattered was my life in the present!

I began to pull books down one by one, scanning their titles in the dim candlelight: Runes of the Forgotten Age. The Language of Power. Ether and Blood: The Mind as a Conduit. Most of them spoke in riddles, poetic nonsense, vague accounts of power that could move mountains or summon storms. I wasn’t looking for theatrics. I wanted understanding, control. Something I could use. Hours slipped by. I sat cross-legged on the cold ground surrounded by piles of open books. My eyes were sore, and my stomach cried out for good. But I couldn’t stop. Every word pulled me deeper.

Ruby turned her head and shot me a provocative look, her eyes brimming with smug satisfaction. I stood at the edge of the crowd, a faint, cold smile tugging at my lips. Just as I thought. A moment ago, I had cursed her in my mind, calling her an idiot, and she hadn’t reacted at all. However, the second I started thinking through specific skill data, she responded immediately. So her mind-reading skill wasn’t all-knowing. It seemed she could only pick up on the most focused, technical thoughts in my mind.

After that, I spend an hour in the gym downstairs, and then I grab some lunch before wandering into the rec room with a book my dad sent me called Finding Your Center: The Busy Woman's Guide to Inner Peace and Tranquility. I make it three pages before I start to feel antsy. It's too easy to let my mind wander while I'm reading. My thoughts keep going back to my argument with Luca last night. Or to our practice session last week. Or to a dozen other little things I've promised myself I won't think about.

Like my own balls being sliced off. Also, I ain’t above admitting The Way of Ah-Tzenul was working on my head something fierce. The King in Yellow, Long Lost Friend, The Traveler’s Gate and some of Lovecraft’s books have worked on my head something fierce, too (though I can’t bear to throw them out, on account of how much I love books in general), but they wasn’t nothing compared to this. I ain’t ashamed to admit I haven’t exactly been in my right mind since I first opened that damn book . . .
