Sometimes people ask for recommendations and forget how different one kid is from another. Edgmon throws you right into a trans fae protagonist navigating political scheming and a forced engagement, which is way more intense than a typical high school story. For the ones who’ve already burned through the contemporary stuff, that shift into fantasy where the queerness isn't the whole plot, just part of the character’s fabric, seems to hit different. Malinda Lo’s 'Last Night at the Telegraph Club' is another layer—historical, slower, about discovery in 1950s Chinatown. It doesn’t read like a 'problem novel' at all, which I think a lot of readers appreciate.

Honestly, the field has gotten so much better lately that the real trick is matching the reader’s mood, not just finding 'a queer book.' If they’re after messy, flawed characters, 'Iron Widow' by Xiran Jay Zhao re-frames a polyamorous dynamic as a weaponized war machine, which is about as far from a sweet romance as you can get. It’s all about where they’re at.

Back when I was a teen myself, I craved stories where the heroine wasn't just waiting around for someone to save her. A classic gateway for that is 'The Hunger Games' trilogy, obviously, but I think it's become almost too obvious. Lately, I've seen a real shift toward girls whose strength is more than just physical. I devoured 'The Cruel Prince' by Holly Black recently—Jude's power is all about cunning and political maneuvering in a world stacked against her, which felt incredibly refreshing compared to another chosen one with a sword.

Some readers might roll their eyes at yet another fantasy rec, but contemporary stuff can hit just as hard. 'The Poet X' by Elizabeth Acevedo has a protagonist, Xiomara, whose strength comes from finding her voice through poetry against a backdrop of strict family expectations. It’ s a quieter, more internal kind of power, but man, it packs a punch. I wish I’d had that book when I was fifteen and felt like I couldn't speak up.

I'd say the 'Six of Crows' duology totally fits the bill. Kaz Brekker and his crew are some of the best-written, morally messy characters I've seen in a while, and the heist plot moves so fast you won't want to put it down.

It's fantasy, but the magic system isn't overly complicated, which is nice for someone who doesn't want to wade through a thousand pages of lore just to get to the action. The relationships—romantic and otherwise—are complicated in a way that feels really authentic for that age, all that figuring out who you are and who you trust.

Plus, the book is just so much fun. It's got the found family vibes, the high-stakes scheming, and enough witty banter to keep you grinning.
