We navigated the winding corridors of the first floor until we finally reached the massive double doors of the private library. Kade pushed the doors open and walked directly to the back wall of the room, stopping in front of a tall wooden bookshelf filled with heavy encyclopedias. He reached behind a thick leather-bound volume and pulled a hidden metal lever. The entire bookshelf clicked loudly and swung outward on heavy steel hinges, revealing a thick reinforced steel door equipped with a digital keypad. Kade typed a rapid sequence of numbers into the glowing panel, and the heavy door hissed open to expose a brightly lit concrete room.

It sat apart from the others, set against the east wall with a natural gap between it and its neighbor that created a shadow corridor the morning light hadn't touched. The door was different from the storage buildings beside it. Heavier. A lock that had been chosen rather than defaulted to, the kind of deliberate security that said the contents mattered without advertising what the contents were. And one board in the eastern face had worked itself loose at the bottom corner. Not much. An inch, maybe two. A small failure of maintenance in an otherwise well-kept compound, the kind of small failure that accumulated in old buildings over time regardless of how much authority lived inside them.

He can’t stop being amused by how sturdy the materials used on building the whole floors are. At the second floor of the building, there are eight rooms, four at each side facing each other. Each door has names on it that indicate who owns the room. Kanaye stepped forward when he saw his own name at the door. He hurriedly opened the door out of excitement. The door is heavy and is made of very sturdy wood. At waist level on the left of the door is a metal panel, which supports a large metal doorknob.

But the bones are there.” I stepped forward, fingers brushing the smooth railing of the porch. “Leo,” I whispered. “It’s beautiful.” He relaxed a fraction. “It’s… ours,” he said quietly. “If you want it.” I moved slowly, taking in the details. The doorframe had little carvings along the sides—tiny leaves, moons, and, I realized, books. A wolf’s profile tucked among them. Inside, the air smelled like fresh wood and possibility. There was a main room, open and bright despite the trees outside, with a corner clearly meant for a reading chair—a built‑in window seat with cushions already in place.

I have a feeling this isn’t food. I twist the single manacle I’m left wearing on my right hand as I near the door, worried about messing up my plan by opening it and whoever’s behind it locking it tight again, like Declan failed to do. I make a snap decision and stuff a book as far as I can beneath the left door, knowing the right side is always the one that swings open. If the door remains unlevel, it won’t lock properly. At least, I’m praying that’s the case. I listen as keys jingle on the other side of the door and stand back, my heart hammering.

Then, with all the strength he seems to have in his body, he pulls. At first, nothing seems to happen, but then there’s a sound like metal being stretched. I can’t hear him groaning from inside the car, but I can see his face, twisted with strain, his cheeks growing redder and redder by the second. Metallic groans and pops sound from the hinge and the latch of the door. Then suddenly, the entire door snaps off its frame. Blake topples over backwards and kicks a leg up to keep the door from crashing down on top of him. It falls to the side and lands in the brush, and I hear him let out a deep exhale.

Linda remarked. "I don't blame him, he's probably had it rough." Brant shrugged. Linda knocked again. "What again!" Mr Walborn scolded her as he angrily popped his head through the half opened the door. The door was barely even serving its purpose as a door. Part of it had been consumed by wood louse, folding and faulting had had its fair share on the door. The doorknob wasn't something to reckon about. Rust had eaten a greater part of it.

Glancing at the kitchen window, I see Juliet watching me, and putting on my most comforting smile, I ignore the excited dog beside me and wait for her to get started on her breakfast cooking. This far removed from town and with as little of material value that we have, there’s never been a need to put a lock on the cellar’s storm doors— the slide bolt's been sufficient. Examining them now, I suspect that’s changed. The bar that normally keeps them closed is angled out of alignment, and one of the hinges on one door is badly bent.

We didn’t stop at the bakery. Back in the room, the door looked worse under afternoon light. The crack across the central panel had reached the iron band; brown sap had bled along the split and hardened there, tacky to the touch—if wood could sweat, this was it. The shimmer on the threshold held, but farther out on the frame, in the corners and the seams, it thinned. You could see the air ripple where it tugged.

“This is so cool!” The room was square, built around the central trunk. The ceiling was about five feet high, which had seemed plenty big enough to me as a ten-year-old, but now as I thought about it, Stephen had never been able to stand straight in here. There were a few mildewy books, a falling-apart little bookshelf, two frames on the floor that my father had installed back when he wasn’t a complete prick. They were the perfect width for the cots now leaned up against the wall and would stop them from moving on the floor when thoughtless boys decided to do things like wrestle or… other things.
