After two days of high temperatures and intense boredom, he remembered the three books. Sam pulled out the one with the Mummy on the cover, because it looked the most innocuous. It was entitled the Ninth Pan Book of Horror Stories. He wasn’t the least bit prepared for what he found inside. The first three stories involved emasculation, murder and burning at the stake. In his fevered state Sam felt he was not only watching the characters’ suffering, he was experiencing it along with them. He flung the book at the wall and then hid it again, wishing he could burn it like Jinnot, the young girl in the third story who was burned alive.

I ask him and he stands and goes over to his bookshelves and pulls out a huge book and brings it over to desk that sits in the corner of the room. I quickly get up and moved to him wanting to see the content in the book. I look at the pages as Travis flips slowly through them and I realize every horror movie made in Hollywood was made from a creature of this book. I began to read a page and Travis went to flip the page to quickly and I reached down to stop him from flipping the page and my hand accidentally brushed his hand and chills went through my body to the tips of my toes and I turned to look at him and he was already looking at me.

“I found this book outside. It has all the answers.” I furrow my eyebrows together. “What are you talking about, Alex?” His attention turns back to the weathered book in his hands. He flips through the pages until he finds the one he’s looking for. “Look at this.” He hands the book to me. I scan the words, latching onto the ones at the very top. How To Kill A Vampire. Suspicion descends over me. “Alex, are you sure this is even real? It sounds a little made-up.”

What the hell is happening here? “What the fuck?” I say. Is this some kind of prank that Victor’s decided to pull? He should know that we are not in high school anymore, and this kind of behaviour is nothing but stupid. I don’t understand what this means, but I know it’s nothing good. I don’t know what to do. Should I touch the book? Should I even go near it? What if something bad happens to me if I do touch the book? The book finally stops moving, and it stays on one page. There’s an image in the book. I look hard at what’s being portrayed, and it’s the image of a beast with large horns.

There was a table. Books stacked on it. Not like the ones I used to see at home. These looked older. Some of them had markings on the covers I didn’t understand. I walked closer. My fingers hovered over one of them before I touched it. The cover felt rough. Worn. I opened it slowly. The pages were filled with symbols. Not letters. Not words I knew. Shapes. Lines. Things that looked like drawings but weren’t. I frowned. “What is this…?” I flipped a page.

My wolf replied. I shook off the "what-ifs" that held me back and turned back to the towering oak shelves. My fingers traced the spines of leather-bound books, all of them layered in dust that made my nose itch. "Focus," I muttered to myself. "One monster at a time." I immediately admonished myself. I continued to look until I found the books my dad had recommended. I pulled the four heavy volumes from the shelves. The History of Shadow Entities, The Blood Rites of the Unseen, The Search for Shadows and one volume of Pack Lore and Ancient Threats. I carried them to a secluded corner of the library. The dust felt suffocating, but I wouldn't let anything stop me.

“No doubt.” “What about those two small FedEx boxes?” “Most recent novels from Samhain Horror.” “Awesome. Those books I bought at the Webb County Library sale last week?” “Sorted into general and mystery fiction. Struck the mother lode with all those Mary Higgins Clark novels.” “We cater to all tastes, miss. Unless you like Twilight, 50 Shades of Gray or James Patterson. Folks want drivel, they can drive to Utica.” “Hey. I actually liked Twilight. It wasn’t all bad.”
