The book launch for Emma's third novel took place on a crisp October evening at Elliott Bay Book Company, Seattle's most beloved independent bookstore. Emma stood behind the podium looking out at a packed audience of romance readers, fellow authors, publishing professionals, and friends who had supported her journey from struggling writer to bestselling author.

The invitation arrives via email. It's from Lisette. The subject line says: "Book Club - You Should Come." And the message is typical Lisette. Direct. No preamble. Just: "I started a book club. First month we're reading your book. You should come read to us." I call her immediately. "You started a book club and didn't tell me?" I ask. "I'm telling you now. It's six women. We meet once a month. This month we're reading your book because it's important and it's brilliant and I want to talk about it with people who will actually understand why it matters."

The extra points would help her grades, but the real reason was because she didn’t want to be seen. In the Bookworms Club, you were practically invisible, a group made up of nerds and introverts. Exactly where she belonged. Free from the popular boys… and her sister. “Yes,” she finally answered, lowering her gaze. “It’s because of your status, right?” He suddenly muttered, causing her to look up at him.

Beneath were flawless downward-turned lips she knew Sean satisfyingly feasted on now and then. A grim stare in her direction had Gianna turning her face in embarrassment. He caught her staring. Should she call it a miracle that Sean hadn't looked her way all day or gotten two meters close to her? Was it due to the effect of the slap or simply a bite of guilt? Whatever it was, she hoped it lasted a while longer. "We have a book club going on, I believe you must have heard about it." Gianna began. "The book donation thingy?" "Yeah, we campaign for you to join us. If you're interested that is," she offered. "New ideas for improvements are welcome at any time." She added, for effect.

We both belong in the same community of-” “Writers,” I quickly cut in, scowling at Chike. “We met in a book club,” “When did you have time to join or go to a book club?” Felicia looks at me with raised eyebrows. “It’s an online book club, like a community of readers,” Chike adds. “Oh, that’s nice,” Felicia expresses. “Toke loves books more than any other thing.” The conversation changes as they bring up another topic which is discussed for some time, and before we know it, two hours was gone.

Fang City Books hosted several types of book clubs. Tonight, her thoughts kept straying to her old lover, Dex. She wondered where he was, and what he was doing ,but she pushed away thoughts of him. This bookstore was a rectangular building with huge glass windows on either side of the wooden door. Their neighbour, Mr Walter, a tall but very lean man, welcomed them inside and guided them.
