Boring Books For Bedtime Novels & Stories

I sat with my back on the headboard while Aiden and Abby lay on either side of me, with their heads leaning against me as I told them as much as I could remember from one of the bedtime stories Celine and I were usually forced to sit through back at the foster home. We always found it boring and would be among the first kids to do off before she even read two lines from the story, the other kids would fall closely behind, it was that dreadful. But tonight, the kids found my old, half-complete, gap-filled story fascinating enough to listen to as I tried to lull them to sleep.

I praised and adored my body while I scrolled through the pictures of me on my phone. "What else can I do?" I questioned myself. It was past midnight already but I couldn't allow myself to just sleep and let this chance slip like some slimy shit on a layer of butter. I went to his library and I found totally amazing books; romance novels, books on business, motivational books, etc. I went for the romance novels and fortunately for me, I was able to complete two of them; a fast reader, uhn. As I started with the third one, I was already feeling too sleepy. I was tempted to lay on my bed, keeping the book to my face. The more I tried to read, the more sleepy I was.

By the fifth, her breathing had softened into the steady rhythm of sleep. I closed the book gently and sat there for a moment, watching her.

A small nightlight shaped like a rocket ship glowed in the corner. "Mummy, can you read me a story?" Bernard asked, his big eyes looking up at her hopefully. She smiled and brushed his hair back. "Of course, sweetheart. Which one?" "The one about the brave knight!" Mrs. Harrington reached for the book on the nightstand and began reading. Her voice was soft and soothing, painting pictures of castles and dragons in the boy's imagination. Within minutes, Bernard's eyelids grew heavy, and soon he was fast asleep. She kissed his forehead gently, turned off the main light, and stepped out of the room, closing the door quietly behind her.

The drawers are jammed with underwear: panties, bras, stockings. What else? The bedside tables... A pair of lamps. A plastic tumbler and a bottle of sparkling water. A clock. A radio. I slide the drawer closed again. Something's pulling at me. Something missing. I can't put my finger on it.

I picked him off the floor and walked us to the bedroom. "Can't I stay up for five more minutes?" Adrian asked, his beautiful jade eyes shimmering in the glow of his Power Ranger night light. After a few pages of the children's book I'd saved on my Kindle, Adrian was fast asleep. Plugging my phone in, I settled beside him, stroking his dark hair away from his chubby face.

They just follow her around like sheep with the hopes that she’ll notice them one day. I’m home in time to tuck Betsy in, and for the first day in weeks I can read her a bedtime story.
