His jaw tightened, but his eyes—just for a heartbeat—flickered with something raw.
“Elena,” he began.
But I shook my head, tears burning hot. “I can’t keep doing this.”
I turned and walked out before he could stop me.
Back at the apartment, Maya was waiting, arms crossed. “What happened?”
“I exploded. In his office. In front of him.” I threw myself onto the couch.
Maya blinked, then smiled slowly. “Good. About time someone knocked the ice off his ego.”
“Okay, plan B,” Maya declared, pacing the living room. “We distract the internet. Cat videos. Puppies. Something trending. If they can’t make you a villain today, maybe tomorrow they’ll forget your name.”
