The Don's Forbidden Muse
Maybe there’s something—anything—that will make sense of this betrayal.
I try unlocking it, knowing full well that I spent most of last night trying to do the same thing. But still, I try.
I fumble with the latch, but it won’t budge. I am slowly getting more frustrated with every single second that passes.
I take a step out of the car and slam the box against the hood.
Nothing.
I throw it onto the concrete ground—still nothing. I stomp on it, my chest heaving.
Again, nothing.
It’s too much. A scream rips from my throat as I pick up the box and hurl it against the pavement again and again, desperate to break it open, to break anything, because I am breaking, and I have no idea how to stop.
