Summer's Pov “He broke up with me again!!” Ruby's voice cracks on the word again, and before I can even process what she's saying, she's throwing herself into my arms like the world just ended. Her whole body shakes with sobs, mascara already streaking down her perfect cheeks, and I catch her weight automatically even though I've been through this exact scene approximately seventeen times in the past year. I came back from picking up takeout to find the fingerprint lock on our front door wouldn't recognize me. The passcode had been changed too. I was about to call my boyfriend Lawrence when I remembered he'd just broken up with me. I looked down at myself, wearing nothing but loungewear and slippers, a coffee stain splashed across my shirt. But when I stepped into the courtyard, I heard angry and loud noises. A crowd had gathered near the fountain and in the center stood Darren and Sophia. Darren’s face was swollen on one side, with his lip split, and eye bruised purple. He looked like he’d been hit by a truck. Sophia stood with her arms crossed, chin high, and eyes flashing. “You can’t just do this,” she snapped. “I just did,” Darren said. His voice was rough. “We’re done.” Sophia laughed, short and bitter. “You don’t get to break up with me, Darren. I’m the one who ends things. Not you.”

Leslie was curled up on the couch, wrapped in a blanket, her eyes red and puffy, tears still streaming down her face. There was a movie playing in front of her, judging by the overly dramatic music and the emotional conversation filling the room, it was definitely a sad one, the type Leslie loves. I blinked a couple of times trying to wrap my head around everything, “what... is going on here?” Leslie sniffled loudly, clutching a pillow to her chest as she looked at me, “they broke up…” she cried. I stared at her, inhaling gently, “who broke up?” “The main characters!” she wailed, pointing weakly at the TV. “After everything they went through!”
