“I can’t breathe. Alex, I can’t.”
“You can,” I insisted, forcing a calm I didn’t feel. I needed to be strong for him, to push down my own fears and frustrations. “Look at me, Liam. Focus on me.”
Slowly, he opened his eyes, his chest heaving as he tried to mimic my slow, measured breaths. I counted aloud, each number a lifeline. “In for one... two... three... hold... out for three... two... one.”
His breathing faltered, but he tried again, a strained whimper escaping him as he struggled to match the rhythm. I kept my voice steady, counting over and over until the panic began to ebb, leaving him exhausted and shivering.
