Only her tears and gasping sounded in the chilly night air. "Breathe." He leaned in and scooped her up into his arms. Her frame was so cold in his arms, "Breathe for me, princess." His arms encircled her back, and he squeezed tightly. He felt her take slower, deeper breaths, and finally, she was breathing normally. He smiled slightly and leaned his head against hers, her warm vanilla scent filling his nose. Something about it calmed his raging soul, calmed the war that constantly waged in his mind daily.

Magnus held his broadsword, its blade etched with ancient runes meant to ward off dark magic. The wind picked up suddenly, howling through the trees like a ghostly wail. It tore through the forest with such force that the three of them had to brace themselves, the gust nearly knocking them off their feet. Leaves and debris swirled around them, creating a cyclone of movement that obscured their vision. The howling grew louder, almost deafening, until it felt like the forest itself was screaming in warning.

I wiped my forehead and realized the flooded sweat all over my body. I closed my eyes and took a long inhale and let it out gradually. I felt my muscle, they were restless, I ache for doing something, and smelled the damp dried leaves around and heard the sound of dancing leaves as the wind blew. I tried to calm my breath but I only went on suffocating. I hurriedly opened my window and unconsciously closed my eyes as I felt the calming breeze of air.

Elena POV Inhale. Exhale. Inhale. Exhale. Something heavy surged in my chest as I shifted back and realized that the breathing exercise wasn’t working. My heart started pounding fiercely against my ribs as if it couldn’t wait to get out. It definitely wasn’t fear burning in my veins as I forced myself to breathe through my nose, even as mind numbing pain travelled from my chest, to my arms, to my spine. I licked my dry lips. No, It wasn’t fear. I couldn’t allow fear come into my mind, not right now when it felt like waved were crashing against my ears.

Love can hit you when you least expect it. It could be a soft easy wind that caresses you and gets stronger over time till it absorbs into your body and heart. Other times it can hit you like a gale-force wind and take every breath you will ever have, and breathe life into the person who took it in the first place. Laken stole my breath. She was my gale-force wind, and I will gladly give her every breath I have just to keep her safe, alive, and mine. If I have to live without her then I don’t want my breath. I don’t want anything but her. I will go to hell and back to get her from the grips of death.
