I arch my back. "Shh! Baby." He whispers. He speeds up and I start building up and seconds after I explode on his hands screaming his name. He retreats his fingers and makes no other move, "Why are you stopping?" He has left me a panting sweaty mess, "All in good time baby, sweet dreams." Fuck.

His breathing changes. It's subtle. Controlled. The specific small shift of a man who's registered something and is trying not to show it, almost succeeding. The "almost" is in a single breath that's not quite the working breath, not quite the steady rhythm from before. One breath with a different quality, a depth that wasn't there a moment ago. He doesn't look up. I don't look up.

I questioned instantly, thinking I did something to trigger a panic attack. She was quiet for a moment. Her eyes weren’t focused on me as she took quick breaths. I don’t know if that’s the type of breathing she’s supposed to be doing, but I think it’s not. “Cass? It’s okay. It’s just me. It’s just dumbass Collin. Breath in with your nose, slowly let it out through your mouth. Like this.” I instructed, demonstrating the breathing technique I’ve seen one of the kids at the Boys & Girls Club do when they start to have an asthma attack.

Adom just continues to try and drag in breath after breath unsuccessfully, starting to feel lightheaded. "Okay. You're hyperventilating. Try to take deep breaths" Alexander tries to demonstrate by taking exaggerated breaths in and out. Adom is too panicked to listen properly; his chest doesn't ache as much but he can't seem to catch his breath. Alexander grabs Adom face and tries to catch his eyes. "Look at me," Alexander caresses his cheek with a thumb, tender and easy. "Look at me," He repeats and Adom looks, as if the voice had commanded him to. "Follow me," Alexander inhales, holding it for a few seconds before letting it out and then repeating. Adom copies him until his breathing evens
