He had a complicated emotion swirling in his eyes, and his voice was hoarse when he called out my name. I didn't say a single word in response. I wondered if he was going to beg me to empathize with Frank and Madison again. "You were reborn, weren't you?" My expression morphed into one of shock upon hearing his words. I whipped around and tried to make a break for it.

“I don’t know who that was, but I can see the light back in your eyes. You look happier.” I blinked at her, surprised by the warmth in her words. “Do I? Really?” She nodded, her smile deepening. “You’ve been walking around like a shadow, hijo. Now you look alive again.” Alive. The word startled me. Was that what love did? Even the smallest glimpse of it could bring someone back to life? I handed her the phone, reluctant to let it go. “Thank you for lending it to me. I… I think I really needed this.”
