She said as Evelyn stared at her stupefied. "No. It's not safe for him. How could I leave him behind to die?" Evelyn asked, crying. "He'll break if I leave him," she whispered, trembling as Brittany looked at her with despair. Marie was so scared when she had Evelyn but it was Brittany who comforted her and said Evelyn would bring a huge change in their world after all she was a forbidden child.

“You look like something happened.” I don’t know if I should talk about what just happened, and I certainly don’t feel like it. So I say. “It's been a long afternoon.” Brittany appears at the top of the stairs. She comes down without rushing, taking in the foyer in one sweep. Her eyes move over the guards, then focus on me. “Both of you go ahead. I will join you shortly.” Marianne looks like she intends to say something. Then she looks at Brittany’s face and decides against it. Benjamin follows with a shrug.

When we find exactly what we are looking for…nothing…we turn to head back up the rickety stairs. Getting back to Marietta and Brianna takes longer as we focus on feeling for anything that comes close to the kind of magic we feel from the Shadow Markers or even the flowing warmth we felt inside the barrier at the Rift. Feeling rather happy than before, they made their way to Marjorie who was keeping a close eye on Hail. “He’s all rigid and all. Not a sight of gestures,” Marjorie said as they inspect the dimension carefully. “It’s almost as though he’s dead.” Briane sniggered. “I won’t care if he does. With his betrayal, I may be much happier if he does stop breathing.”

Disappointment took over her. She should not have fallen asleep so quickly, she should have held on longer. She got up and went to brush her teeth, taking a shower while she was at it. It was only 6 a.m. She had already packed up their luggage the day before. She wanted to make some fried fritters for Bellamy. In her memory, Marie once bought him fried fritters, and he chomped two of them at once. But because of the long-distance, it was already a little cold when it was brought back. Such a pity.

"Disappeared. She didn't check in for her shift, her apartment's empty, and her number's no good. Someone got to her first." Marie's hand clenched around the counter until the knuckles went white. "You said you were watching her—" "I was," Brenn interrupted. "And whoever did it knew what they were doing. She didn't run, Marie. She was taken." Marie's breath caught. "By them? A break. "Who else?" She hung up without responding, her face in the mirror growing hard, beastly. "Jamaica," she spat. "That sly snake."

Reed approached them, his expression serious. "We need to talk about what happened. There are too many unanswered questions." Marinetta nodded. "I agree. There’s something you all need to know." --- In a secluded part of the Montgomery pack territory, Marinetta gathered with Reed, Zack, and Maranda. She took a deep breath and began to recount her encounter with Chris, now revealed to be Brian.

STORM Else dashed off to get the kit like she knew exactly where it was. I was still very shocked at the sight of Marie’s body to stop her. I put her on the bed, and she lay sprawled across the bed like a discarded doll. Face bruised, lips cracked, eyes swollen shut. Breathing, but barely. Else came back, her heels clicking frantically against the tiled floor. “Where can I find it?” she asked, her voice trembling. It hit me then we weren’t home. This wasn’t my house, and there was no medical kit here.

After freshening up, I went to the living room and dialed Jacob’s number. He picked almost immediately. “Where are you?” I asked. “Brittany asked me to take her to her parents house and she is still there” “Okay” I said and dropped the call. I really want to see her and at the same time, I don’t want to. Her words...I kept remembering them. Was it a mistake marrying her? I closed my eyes trying to get the thoughts off my head. I heard a feminine voice which made me lapse back into consciousness.
