I have to be able to join in the fight. Because of the way my hands are positioned now, I’m able to slide my right hand upward just a few millimeters. It’s hard work. I have to contort my hand into painful shapes, bringing the heel of my thumb in to press against my pinky. I have to pull hard against the chain, so that it digs into my skin, and it hurts. And at one point, I get myself stuck, unable to move my hand forward or backward. I struggle to keep the pain off my face and to swallow my terror that someone will come to check my chains and find me halfway through a jailbreak like this.

The soles were cracked and dry, the leather frayed beyond repair, offering no protection from the cold floor that sapped what little warmth he had left. The heavy chains that bound him were thick and unyielding, each link a testament to his captivity. They were secured tightly around his wrists and ankles, digging into his flesh with a merciless grip. The metal was cold, biting into his skin, adding to the agony that already consumed him. Then louder: "You killed him!" With a guttural cry, she yanked her left hand free, the branched stone chains shattering like glass. Impossible—those were benched stone, it should weaken any elemental! She tore the right one apart next, the fragments crumbling to dust. Power radiated from her, raw and untamed, the air crackling with electricity.

Let's Try.” I slowly sighed before tightening my grip on the chains around my wrists, It was so hot but I was smiling through the pain. Electricity coursed through us, and the sensing of a reconnection felt really like embers catching fire in the night. The chains started to glow, lines appeared on their surface, and, with one last push, they broke apart reducing into dust.

“True, I don’t like the circles under her eyes. Can we take her to the medical centre? Or do you insist on keeping her here?” It surprised Cal as much as the healer with his strong emotional response to this inquiry. “No, she stays here.” Cal watched Jaxon with the chains. He was looking at them speculatively, and Cal knew his thoughts. Jaxon hadn’t witnessed Cal’s claim to her. However, Jaxon knew they weren’t the standard one-night issue chains kept for the curious to play at being a submissive. These were Cal’s personal chains. He placed on women he claimed for a time.

The midnights cold sinks into my exposed body, limp from fatigue. My chest heaves with exhaustion.
