I didn't ask for anything that wasn't rightfully mine, but I made damn sure to get everything that was. I glanced at Zachary beside me, he looked completely broken. Anxious. Defeated. Nothing like the confident man I'd married. "Ella, is this really it for us? No second chances?" "That's right. We're done." I studied his face, remembering how nervous he'd been when he first asked me out all those years ago. But I wasn't that starry-eyed girl anymore. A cracked mirror can never reflect a perfect image again. Zachary and I—our story had reached its final page.

"No, Mom. Don't you still have Mr. Francis?" "He could never compare to you," Queenie replied. Since my death, she seemed to have aged a decade overnight. Leroy looked at her both fearfully and numbly. He was noticeably less lively than other kids his age. My heart ached at the sight of this. From the moment I had agreed to the surgery, I hadn't planned on surviving. Before my paralysis, I had been a confident, successful architect. But after the accident, my nights had been filled with unbearable suffering.

It was as if he was trying to eliminate her very existence and the memory of their life together completely. By then, she'd given up caring anyway. Her heart had frozen inside her as she went from disbelief to wondering if he was suffering some kind of mental break. It was hard for her to accept even then that he was no longer the boy she knew. You're broken, but that doesn't mean you can't pull the undamaged parts of yourself together and live a full life."

I added, acting like I was surprised. “There is a difference between the pain you receive from dying and being in pain due to splitting up,” he reasoned out. “I didn’t know if I was going to get well or I’d be dead in a couple of months, Ayesha.” He tried to grab my hand but I managed to distance myself. “The only thing I could think of at that time was to break up with you so you won’t need to suffer with me.” I shook my head, not wanting to accept his reasons. I still find it hard to believe or rather, why didn’t he believe in me?

"Deanna, what did you just say? "Didn’t you say before that this child was the treasure your whole family had been waiting for? That I was a hero to your family? That you’d treat me well for the rest of your life? How can you turn on me like this?!" "That was before!" Deanna screamed, her voice breaking. "Look at the situation now! My company is being destroyed. Your family is collapsing. I’m not going down with you! We’re breaking up right now. Stop clinging to me!"

His voice trailed off, and he squinted, swiping his tongue over his bottom lip. He was trying so hard not to break down again, but he was failing terribly. "I...I shouldn't have killed her. I fucked up...like I always do. I didn't realize how broken I was... I've felt fractured for centuries...but I didn't understand how…um...how wrecked I was...fuck, I'm screwed..." He was rambling now, his eyes shining with unshed tears. He let out a hollow laugh, and I reached out to hold his hand. "Who's...who's going to love something...that's so...broken?"

Because heartbreak would've been easier to understand. This was obsession breaking apart in real time.

But then she stopped and turned to face him again as if she forgot to say something. "And by the way, I never regret breaking up with you, don’t overdo it Lyken," she smiled sweetly and her voice came out naturally. Jada then went straight to her room while Lyken was rooted in his place. After everything she said so far, that last statement was the most heartbreaking. Of course, she really won't regret breaking up with him after what she saw. Who wouldn’t when everything she saw scarred her heart? Someone tapped Lyken’s shoulder, it was Kobe. Then Honey hugged him, she was crying. He knew she's hurt seeing her best friend like this. It was the same for him.
