Between Breathe And Goodbye
The guide was beside her, his pale face flushed with something that looked almost like life, his silver eyes open and watching the ceiling of the corridor, the walls of light, the impossible architecture of a place that should not exist.
"What did you do?" he whispered.
"I broke it."
"What?"
"The bridge. The law. The either-or." She coughed, tasting blood, feeling the grate of her broken ribs with every breath. "I broke it because it was broken already. It only worked because no one had ever tried to break it."
He was silent for a long moment. Then he laughed. It was a small sound, barely audible, but it was the first laugh she had ever heard from him, and it was beautiful, broken, free.
