Then he was gone, and I had never felt more alone in my life. Paxton jogged up next to me, blinking his grey eyes rapidly. He flashed his charming smile with a wiggle of his brows, but it only lasted a second as he seemed to pick up on my mood. "What's going on, Charlie?" I shook my head, mumbling before diving into the water to cross the river. "There are bears in the forest." "There are also wolves." He said, sounding more relaxed and almost as if he were trying not to laugh at his own joke. We had never had a bounty for a bear before, so we tried to avoid them when we could.

I was in the middle of nowhere with nothing and no one to defend me. The figure drew out into the open area, and the moonlight shone on the monstrous beast. Covered in fur with sharp claws for hands and elongated canines for teeth, before me was a huge brown bear. Its mouth stretched wide, and a gut-wrenching, piercing roar thundered from the monstrous beast's mouth. It echoed through the wood, sending even the trees shaking with fright. I swallowed hard, the gulp very loud. Yeah! This was where I met my demise.

“It is an inside joke,“ Draco said, sobering up. “Do we have bears in the mountain?“ Aiden asked, leaning forward with interest. Mitch chewed on his food for a while, then he said, “Maybe…“ “Polar bears?“ Aiden asked. “I want to meet one.“ He hopped around enthusiastically. I shook my head. “You will not be meeting any polar bears, Aiden.“ As if on sue, Charles walked in, shivering slightly because of the cold but he was unmauled by any wild animal. He was in one piece. “You see, no polar bears," I told my son. He pouted his lips but got disinterested as Charles sat at the table and rubbed his hands to warm them. “Alpha Mitch,“ he said. "I did not think I'd see you at breakfast today.“

I murmur, leaning forward so my voice is a rumble between us, “let me tell you a story…” When she doesn't interrupt, I continue. "A bear had a cub, and it was very hungry. So one day he went hunting. He saw a human baby, abandoned, and decided to make it his cub's meal. He picked up the baby with his fangs digging into its skin and killing it. When he arrived at the place his cub was, there was blood." Charlotte's face creases but she remains silent, listening. "A hunter had mistaken the cub for a rabbit, and shot it. He stared up at the bear shocked to see a baby in its mouth. And the bear shocked to see his cub dead."
