Avery sat beside me, Ember bundled against her chest, asleep and blissfully unaware that the future of two packs was being discussed over her head. Stoneveil’s alpha spoke plainly. “Our land no longer sustains us the way it once did,” he said. “Not just in resources. In cohesion.” He did not name Cade. He didn’t have to. “The fractures were already there,” he continued. “What happened only made them visible.” I watched Avery from the corner of my eye. She was listening—not bracing, not guarding. Present. “We’ve discussed rebuilding,” one of their elders added. “But rebuilding something this compromised would take years. And we would remain vulnerable in the meantime.”

He took a deep breath and continued. "I can't take the weight of your love, I just can't. I'm getting lost on you, I feel like you'll be safe in the hands of another. I'm beyond damaged, I'm broken to the core. There are times I've felt maybe I'm not broken, just bent, but now, now I know I'm broken. Despite knowing broken things still work, I also know there's an expiry date. Broken things work till they don't."

" I roared, slamming the phone onto the ground. Jessica’s departure had left me utterly drained, yet these people continued to suck the life out of me like leeches, greedily feeding off my blood. I closed my eyes and buried my head in my hands, overcome by despair.

His shoulder shook as he broke down crying. Michael's heart broke as he took in his broken Omega. He cursed himself for what he had just done. I ask in a cold voice with a straight face trying to hide the fear creeping up my throat threatening to choke me. "I thought I would come say hello to my mate and you really didn't make it easy to get in. Almost like you didn't want me to come in, but that would be ridiculous. I broke a window and climbed through. Those aren't reinforced. You really wanna be careful with that because someone could just break in whenever they want. Luckily this time it was just me." It almost sounds like he is genuinely concerned about it, yet I know better. He is fucking crazy.
