He yanked a necklace out from under his collar. It held a transparent bottle pendant, smaller than his pinky. Inside the bottle was a rolled-up strip of paper that said: "Max Cairncross is my only best friend." I had one around my neck too. Mine said: "Dylan Price is my only best friend." We gave each other those bottles after graduating high school. They symbolized lifelong friendship.

Annie and I passed by the Build-A-Bear Workshop fairly regularly and whenever we did, she would gaze into the shop with longing in her eyes. Today, I finally planned on building one of those toys with her. When we arrived at the workshop, her grin was as wide as it was when I told her we were going to the aquarium, but the joy behind it was breathtaking. “Are we really going to build a bear?” I nodded and laughed as she practically dragged me into the shop. We took our time in selecting every part of our bear until we emerged with a grey bunny with a red heart sewed onto her chest. Annie named her Tricia and held her close all the way home. Our day had been perfect, but for one small detail.

Maybe Hayes could dig, he’s good at finding things out. Mirabel jumped in. “Alicia Brown—the girl who’s going to be famous for her books one day. She’s always writing in any notebook of hers.” Alicia laughed, a broad, genuine one, her face lighting up. Her eyes crinkled, freckles dancing, and lips curving into a smile that hit me like a memory.
