One of the waiters approached us immediately, and we gave him our order. Until our order came, I told the girls what had happened. It wasn't much anyway. Eric had told me that he would come. He didn't come without an explanation. He didn't answer the phone. He didn't answer the message I left on the answering machine. He just disappeared without a word. "Well, what are you waiting for?" Emma asked me. "What do you mean?" I look at her in astonishment. "Call him now to see if he will answer." "Yes, Emma is right," Nancy agreed.

Nobody was getting through that door. Nobody.

BOOK 2 CHAPTER 44 “Where is everyone? Why is no one here?” I looked in confusion at Dylan, who was currently eating all by himself at the dining table. The house was so incredibly quiet that you could practically hear crickets. Ever since I stepped out of my room, I hadn't heard a single human voice. Dylan looked up at me and shrugged. “They’re gone.” “What?” I asked, completely puzzled. “They went to the estate. They won’t be back until the day after tomorrow.”

My irritation returned instantly. I walked deeper into the house. The kitchen was empty. The living room was empty. The dining room was empty. Everywhere I looked, there was nobody. A knot formed in my stomach. I pulled out my phone. No messages. No missed calls. No explanations. The realization settled heavily in my chest. The staff had left. Not for the evening. Left. Completely. I laughed. A short, disbelieving sound. Of course they had. Why wouldn’t they?

Seeing it empty was far too abnormal. I stormed into the estate with my men as fast as we could. However, there were no signs of a struggle anywhere. It was as if everyone in the entire estate had vanished without a trace. I practically roared into the phone when I called security, “Cruz! Why the hell aren’t any of you here? You’d better have an explanation, or I’ll grind your bones to dust!” Cruz’s voice sounded confused. “Don Vitale, didn’t you tell us not to be there this month?”

The door creaked. I looked up. A nurse peeked in, murmured something about giving us space. I nodded, barely hearing her. It was then that I noticed, nobody had come for her. Not her father. Not her stepmother. Not even her stepsister. No one. She had no one. Just me. And I’d been the worst person she could have had. There was a soft knock at the door. I stood, brushing a hand through my hair, clearing my throat. “Yeah?”

"Huh?" "Because you worry too much!" Natalie fell silent. Wait, was this the time to care about why she hadn't grown taller?! Zane was missing! At this moment, Natalie had no idea what to say. That was all he said before he turned and disappeared out of the door. ************ Several hours had passed and no one had come for my help yet. A part of me believed they were still on the way and a part of me believed no one was coming for me. Why isn't anyone coming? They should be here by now. Frustration fills me up. I just wish James hadn't found out about my little stunt in the morning. I can only imagine what will happen if he comes to know about it. I still have no idea what he is capable of.

I got in a car and decided to travel to his family home first but when I got there, there was nobody present. The whole place was empty and even as I asked if anybody was home, I didn't hear a damn thing. I was very confused as I wondered what was going on. Did he not have a mother? My patience soon started to dwindle and I guess it was time to call it a day. Maybe I could come back another day and check in to see if there was anyone around.
