“It’s a umbrella for you. Butterfly wings are big enough to keep out the rain.” Jenny took the piece of paper in her hands. The paper made a “rustling” sound as it moved between her fingers. The crayon colors left marks on her fingerprints—pink, blue, brown, green—standing out sharply against her pale skin. She looked down at the butterfly. Its wings were pink, with asymmetrical patterns: three dots on the left wing and two on the right. The butterfly’s body was brown, and its antennae were blue, bending to form two question-mark-shaped arcs on the paper.

Looking down, she gasped softly a blue butterfly had landed there, its wings glowing like sapphires in the sunlight. A genuine smile spread across her face. “You’re so beautiful,” she whispered, afraid that even her voice might scare it away. For a moment, it stayed perfectly still as if it understood her, its delicate wings fluttering slightly against her skin. But just as she reached out her hand to touch it, her phone began to ring loudly. Startled, the butterfly lifted off and disappeared into the air. “Oh, come on,” Alina groaned, rolling her eyes in frustration. She reached into her pocket and pulled out her phone.

He laughed with childlike delight.
