Laila’s lips curved into a twisted smile, and she stood, walking toward him slowly, each step deliberate. “Such boldness,” she murmured. “You’ll make a fine alpha one day—perhaps even greater than your father.” She reached out, placing a cold hand on his head, her touch sending an icy shiver down his spine.
Caleb’s instincts kicked in. He howled, loud and defiant, shaking her hand off as if her touch had burned him. Without another word, he turned and bolted out of the room, his heart racing faster than it ever had before.
