Author's POV Fear was an ugly thing on other people and Camilla had spent most of her life observing it. She had seen it in businessmen moments before financial collapse. In politicians cornered by scandal. In lovers realizing devotion was not enough to keep someone from leaving. Fear always distorted people eventually but Camilla despised the sensation in herself. Which was why she refused to name what she felt as she left the Cruize villa that afternoon. It was not fear, it was recalibration and nothing more.

The whole apartment smells like fear, which tells me everything I need to know: we won’t become friends. This woman thinks I’m a monster, just like everybody else, and while that shouldn’t hurt, I’m agitated. Why? Why do I care about what Camilla thinks of me? It makes no damn sense.
