I stood from the table, rolled the cloth into my palm, and walked to the nearest window. Outside, the sky had darkened again. The clouds were thick. The wind carried the scent of rain but there was no thunder. No lightning. Just the low, humming pressure that always came before a storm that didn’t come from the sky.
Behind me, Alex moved closer.
“You’re thinking of leaving,” he said.
“No,” I answered. “I’m thinking of burning everything they’ve ever touched. But I need to do it smart. We can’t strike with blades alone. This fight is bigger than territory. It’s blood and belief and memory and we’re outnumbered on all three.”
