We never asked her to choose, and the silly bet flew out of the window when it barely started. I think this is real. For the first time in a really long time, I was actually, truly okay. Maybe this family thing wasn't so scary after all. Maybe, just maybe, we could do this. Me and Mama and Papa and Mr. Hoppy. Together.

We never gave in. I had built an amazing life with my mate. We had three beautiful children that were the perfect mix of us both. We had a large family, one that could just as easily embarrass us at dinner or fight alongside us in battle. What we had wasn’t something that could be manufactured. It was organic; Each piece, each person, chose to belong and to become a part of the family. Each day was a new adventure waiting to happen even if it was just a mundane Monday in the office. There was always something to accomplish if you kept your senses open. Likewise, each day was a bonding experience for the ones that you held dear.

It's different without mom, but it feels good to be a family again. Even if we're broken, we're trying, and that has to stand for something.

Taking a seat on a nearby bench, we formed a circle, the morning breeze gently rustling through the leaves overhead.
