" Billy muttered as the customers stared at her. She walked over to the counter and washed her hands in the sink after she had placed the tickets on the counter. "That was brave of you, I would not have done that for a million bucks" Hazel spoke as she scoffed. "Easy for you to say" Billy picked one of the tickets and read through it. "Halloween show by 9 PM? Come with your favorite Halloween costume and a partner!" He laughed and turned the back of the ticket. "But, are the skulls on the ticket necessary?"

I stare at the approaching road as I drive from the center of town back home, and I occasionally sip on a coffee I made and poured into a travel mug, but nothing seems to cure my grogginess. Halloween is around the corner and all the businesses around the lake have decorated their storefronts for the holiday. Webs line windows with giant spiders, skeletons stand at attention to usher customers inside, and the dentist's office has a window painting of three witches around a bubbling cauldron with a written offer to trade in candy at a dollar per pound.

Kristy is the least smug person on the planet. “We need to do another one in the fall,” Betty suggests. “A Halloween-themed event would be fun, and it’s something I think you’d like, Callie.” “Yeah, Halloween is cool, and I bet our customers would like it.” I smile, trying to keep my voice level. Betty’s hinted a few times now that she knows something is up with Kristy and me. I don’t think she’ll ever flat-out ask, and after I used magic to get some creep who assaulted her to confess to the police, she wouldn’t risk exposing our secrets.

He’s good with his words, and just like a delicious glass of wine, he makes you feel all relaxed. Today it is Halloween and although we don’t go trick or treating, with around 47 adults in the pack, some of the women thought we should have like a little party. And so here we are all dressed up, with the place decorated really incredibly with cobwebs, spiders, ghosts and blood.

"Do you like Mac and Cheese?" I nod my head, wounding when I should ask what I was doing here, or when I could go home. Carson dances around the kitchen, grabbing a pot, shrikes as she nearly drops the pot on her foot, nearly drops the packet, then results to pocking things with her spoon as she sways on her feet like she was drunk.

The Hunter's moon, it was also known as the dying moon, it was in October. Which was also the month of my birth, I would be turning nineteen by then. What was I supposed to do?
