VITO: (cold, razor-sharp) “That was a failure. Next time... burn the whole room to ash. No survivors. The queen’s pet project must end before the next moon turns red.” ASSASSIN: (hesitating, voice dropping to a whisper) “Sir... there’s something else. The flame... it didn’t need flint. No one touched it. It lit itself. Her scream—her very voice—sparked the torch.” [VITO freezes. His jaw tightens as he slowly turns to face the assassin, eyes narrowing into slits that seem to pierce through the dark. VITO: (voice a deadly whisper) “You’re certain of this?”

The only sound Aurora could hear was his breathing, his flaring nostrils as he took in Aurora’s scent. Realization struck him, followed by anger, “She’s a human”, he managed to say angrily. He had waited all these years to be mated with a human. He could feel it but he knew it would take time for her to feel it. It pained him that her scent was addictive, that he couldn’t take his eyes off her. She was a human for goddess sake, a lowlife, a maid, and a weak being! He was Lucian the Great. I brought the flame close to the captive’s exposed hand, the heat radiating against his already wounded finger. "Last chance. Who sent you?" The captive still did not talk. Without hesitation, I pressed the flame against the man’s wrist. His horrific scream filled the room, echoing off the walls. The scent of burning flesh filled the air in the room.

His blazing blue eyes seemed to be glowing now. “You need to get out of here” he spoke “you shouldn’t see this.” “I have to help Torch” I snapped back “he’s my friend.” Trauma smirked at me, then gripped his gun tighter. “Just make sure you stay alive” he rested a hand on my shoulder, then leapt over the stall to rush towards Slasher. Slasher screamed out, and the police began firing. A sound of the bullets striking Torch’s metal rang out, followed by a screaming as Torch released his stream of bullets. When his arm began smoking, he let it form a flamethrower, that dripped blood as it roasted the nearby police officers and fleeing innocents.

“I’m not exactly a sports person.” “You will be after tonight. The energy is addictive. Hawthorne versus Westfield is always brutal—especially because of the captains. Brad Walker versus Sebastian Hale. Pure rivalry.” I raised an eyebrow. “Sebastian Hale?” “Captain of Westfield. Torch? Searching, she found a tool with a small gas canister attached. Two heavy gloves were wrapped around it, held in place by the goggles’ strap. Carrying the lot to her father, he plucked them from her fingers and set the goggles over his glasses. He tucked the torch under his arm while he slipped on the gloves. “Thanks, honey. Now, stand clear.” Stepping back, Emma heard several clicks while she watched him toy with the torch. Then, a blue flame burst to life at the end of the nozzle. Her father lifted it near the pipe, keeping it just out of reach of the metal.

I expect him to fall down to the ground, unconscious, like the guards did in stories my mother would tell me as a child. Instead he grunts, then turns to me. The mild confusion on his face quickly turns to anger. I stagger back, dropping the torch. “What’s going on?” he says, his face reddening. “Have you... lain with him? She who lies with a beast—” The alpha darts forward and breaks the man’s neck, then shoves him aside. He holds out his hand. I suck in a deep breath. I’m doing this to help my kingdom, I tell myself. Not because—even with blood on his shirt cuffs, and dirt on his face, and one of my guards, dead, at his feet—he is looking at me with kindness.
