He looked at me first, in no hurry to step in and showing no hostility toward Ethan, and only asked, "Do you want me to stay, or should I call security?" It was a short question, but something in my chest eased. He didn't decide for me. He gave me a choice. I said, "Stay." He nodded and moved to stand half a step to my side. Not far, not close. Ethan looked at him. "Who are you?" "Noah Hayes." His tone was level. "Captain of the air medical rescue team. In charge of Dr. Reed's project handover and on-site safety today." Ethan let out a cold laugh. "On-site safety?"

I responded cutely. He frowned, I waited for another insult from him but none came, instead, he laughed weirdly and I did the same feeling like a total idiot. “I am starting to like you boy.” He said and poked my shoulder softly. “I guess I am always likable.” I shrugged. “Where is the captain?” He questioned. “I am right here Henry, what is the problem? after you left this premise unsecured last night.” Killian interjected. He was dressed in his hockey gear and boy! I almost drooled over him. He looked so charismatic and sexy, what could possibly look terrible on such a perfect body?

He held a thick piece of wood in his hands, long and cylindrical but bent here and there, and nearly snapped in half. Sylvia recognized it to be Ol’ Man Rick’s cane, one he stubbornly refused to use save for when his knees ached from the winter chill. “Kill,” she whispered, her throat dry and scratchy. His fiery red eyes studied her intensely. He clicked his tongue and spat at the unconscious Uno. “I told you to watch out for these bastards.” Killian raised the ruined cane high and smacked the boy’s behind with such strength it finally snapped, the broken piece flying a few meters away. Then he threw the useless half in his hand.

“I, Lia D’Caprio, reject you Alpha Killian as my mate.” The words left my mouth before I could stop myself, and Killian’s eyes widened as he loosened his grip around me momentarily. The man went to tighten it again before he was shot. The two of us looked at where the bullet came from only for him to growl when he noticed that it was his beta. Whatever Derek’s motives were behind this, I knew that there was no way that he could let Killian get a hold of him, the man would be dead in seconds if he did.

“Are you planning on staring at me all night, or are you going to hand me a towel?” The mop stick I was holding slipped right off my hand. I had just walked in on the famous hockey team captain, and he was completely naked. I have always hated hockey players, especially the famous ones, and Carter happened to be the most famous player on campus. I never watched his games though to judge how good he was, but he was famous because of his father, Viktor Graham, a hockey legend.

“Leave, before I tear you apart.” The man tilted his head, considering, then drew the hood fully back. His face was pale, unnervingly smooth, but the veins crawling along his jaw pulsed black as if corruption itself had taken root beneath his skin. His eyes were a void, swallowing the faint light that dared touch them. “I didn’t come to fight you,” he said calmly, though his shadows writhed like restless serpents. “I came for her.” He pointed directly at Lola. Something inside Killian snapped. He surged forward with a speed that blurred the air, claws gleaming in the dim light. The intruder raised his hands, shadows rising like a shield.

"Killian, what happened to him?" I turned slowly to look at him. "He’s dead." He stared at me for a long moment before dragging both hands down his face. He closed his eyes and tipped his head back, breathing out slowly through his nose as if he was trying very hard not to say something that would get him killed. "Killian," he said carefully, looking at me again, "tell me you didn’t kill him. Please." "Me?" I scoffed. "No. Of course not. I didn’t kill him. Why would I do that?"

Nathan happened to walk by, stick in hand. I figured that as captain he'd at least do something about the toxic bullying. Instead he was frowning, still griping to the vice-captain. "Our blue-line defense was like wet paper today. Bunch of useless idiots." He didn't even glance at the jerseys strewn across the floor, just took one long stride over them and strode off. Watching his arrogant back, I let out a bitter laugh. Back in my dorm that night, with nowhere to vent, I logged straight into my hockey-forum alt account: IceTyrant.

Wrapping her arm around my shoulder as though we're besties, Rein twirls me to face the sea. "Well then, my hatred will reduce if you keep to your word because Killian is all mine." She circles her free hand in the air for emphasis, then staggers away with her friend running after her. Killian is talking with Alpha Declan who's good-looking with military-cut blonde hair, and probably around Killian's age. He's tall with broad shoulders, but Killian is beefier. Men from both packs circled them. And Killian stops talking, only to openly glance at me, causing Declan to do the same. But Killian doesn't even stop. And I wonder what is going on in his mind.
