“You’re late,” Ava said lightly, though her smile didn’t quite reach her eyes.
Evelyn blinked. “Late? I didn’t realize we planned to meet.”
Ava tilted her head, an almost feline motion. “Didn’t we? Strange. I must have imagined it.” She pushed a book toward Evelyn, a page marked with a ribbon. “But since you’re here, maybe you should read this.”
Evelyn glanced down. The page was from an old volume of folklore, its yellowed parchment crackling under her fingertips. The passage detailed an ancient pact, sealed with blood, between the founders of Wind Grave Academy and forces that should never have been named.
