We walked past sliding doors that led directly outside, then into what he called the game room. It was enormous. Pool tables, arcade machines, a poker table, even a sleek bar tucked into one corner. “Do you actually use all of this?” I asked. “Sometimes,” he said. “When friends come over. Or when I need to blow off steam.”

“I guess so.” “Dude, that’s so cool.” He grinned and nodded at me. When I didn’t say anything, he shook his head as if remembering I was his customer and was waiting on him, and the only reason I was indulging this conversation was because he hadn’t given me my room key yet. He opened a drawer in the desk, rummaged around, and withdrew a little plastic sleeve with a room key in it. He swiped the key card through a strip beside his computer to associate it with my room, and then handed it to me in the sleeve. “Here you go. Sorry. You’re room fourteen. When you go out the door here, follow the building right. Then take another right turn at the pool. Your room is the inside corner unit.” “Than

he pressed. Carson stopped in front of the car, turning around with clear annoyance on his face. “What is wrong with that room? It’s clean. It has a closet, a bed, a bathroom, and perfect furniture with decoration.” He raised his brows at Drake. “Yeah, decoration of sex toys. A room with all kinds of weird sex stuff where you fucked, like, what, half of New Jersey?” Drake rolled his eyes, closing his tab and taking out the keys. Carson scoffed. “If I’m gonna fuck her, then the room shouldn’t be a problem, right?” He tried to get inside the car.

I muttered. "Your card," she said, her voice entirely flat. She extended a hand without looking up. I handed it over immediately. Her expression remained totally blank, bearing the look of someone who just wanted to do her hours and go home. She tapped a few keys on her computer, then handed the card back to me. She had scribbled two words across the back: Room 002. "Room?" I repeated, looking down the dark corridor. The entire layout was unsettling. There was nothing here but a long, stuffy hallway lined with heavy, identical doors. Why would anyone hold a cooking class in a windowless maze like this?
