His hair was slicked back, his smile sharp and practiced. “Found beneath the old water tunnels,” he continued, voice carrying easily, “battered, bleeding, but still breathing. I caught whispers in the air — “traitor,” “The Rogue King will love this one.” The announcer gestured lazily toward me. “They call him Cardan. Some of you may know the name. Others may not care. But you will, once you see what he can do.”

“Okay.” Isaac clears his throat. “This is my best friend, Jude,” he says to Adam. Before Adam can say anything, Jude whirls me around, takes my hand, and pulls me away from the bar. He marches his way to the far end of the compound, away from the crowd. “That was rude!” I comment, finally being able to dig my feet into the grass and bring us to a stop. He lets go of my hand and turns on me. “Oh? Do you want to go back and keep drooling at him?”

“Since when do you voluntarily share me on our dates?” Jude just grinned, one sharp canine pressing down into his lip. He leaned lazily against the back of the Jeep, black hair tousled from the wind, scar catching in the light. The sun highlighted the swatches of ink along his arms. I itched to peel his shirt back and see the newest addition to his collection—the dove tattooed right over his heart. My dove. “Coven bonding,” he replied.

"Here, I got you black cards. Unlimited. You can use them for anything you want." Silence. Then chaos. Jude dropped her tea. Kris jumped from the sofa. "Black card! For me!" Kris stormed forward to hug Suzan tightly, but she dodged him smoothly. Kris lost his balance and fell down hard on the carpet. But he still laughed like a fool. Jude screamed, holding the card to her chest, "Oh, my daughter, you're becoming more useful each and every day!" Suzan went upstairs and left them rejoicing as if they had won a ticket to heaven.
