MY WILD OBSESSION
he starts, leaning back like he is settling in for a conversation, “I wasn’t expecting you to show up. Knowing I’m here for you… I thought you’d avoid me.”
I rest my arm casually on the chair, my expression blank.
“Are you something to be avoided?” I ask calmly. “Mr…?”
“Sam Carter,” he replies quickly, like he has been waiting to say it. “A prosecutor—formerly in Indiana, but I’ve moved to New York City. I’m also the older brother of the late Steve Carter.”
There it is. I nod once, slow.
“Oh. The late musician,” I say, keeping my tone neutral. “My condolences.”
