She walked barefoot through the small flat she shared with Nia, the quiet hum of the fridge the only sound greeting her as she shed her jacket and tossed her handbag onto the couch. Her hands moved automatically, unfastening the zipper at the back of her dress as she headed to her room. The fabric pooled at her feet, and she pulled on her favourite oversized hoodie, soft, worn, with a faded print that once said Trust the Universe. It was the only thing in her life right now that still felt familiar. Cassandra flopped down on her bed, grabbed her phone from the nightstand, and saw the last few messages from her best friend. She had to keep going. Her eyes landed on a writing desk in the corner. Cass drifted towards it, her fingers brushing over the smooth mahogany as she sat down in the tufted leather chair.
