When it was done, he sat slumped and shaking, empty sockets streaming, the front of his shirt dark with blood. He made small, wordless sounds that no longer formed into real pleas.
I wiped the blade clean on his sleeve and stepped back. I looked down at what was left of him.
“Only I am allowed to touch Cassian,” I said, voice still even, still empty of anything resembling heat. “Only I am allowed to kill him. Not you. Not anyone else. That privilege belongs to me alone.”
