He moves to Anika, then to Cordelia, dropping the iron bands onto the stone floor with three loud thuds. “Move,” I order. We sprint through the narrow stone corridors of the east wing. The castle is a madhouse. Servants are throwing blankets into water troughs, and warriors are running toward the courtyard with leather buckets. We burst through the heavy oak double doors and hit the courtyard tarmac. The air outside smells entirely of burnt pine and scorched hair. The sky above the eastern ridge is completely black, choked with thick, rolling clouds of soot.

They were cutting straight through the heart of the enemy's defenses. After an hour of intense hiking, the ravine finally opened up into a wide, circular clearing surrounded by towering pillars of jagged black glass. In the distance, perched atop the highest peak, the massive silhouette of the obsidian castle loomed against the dark sky, its towers glowing with a sickening violet light. "We're close," Zach whispered, his silver-gold eyes fixated on the castle gates. "Mommy is right there." But as the squad stepped into the clearing, the emerald dome around them violently shattered.

Kane POV The dusty landscape stretched endlessly before us, a barren expanse bathed in the reddish glow of an otherworldly sky. The air was thick with the scent of sand and stone, and the atmosphere carried a sense of isolation that weighed heavy on my shoulders. In the distance, perched atop a towering cliffside overlooking a restless sea, a grand, fortress-like castle came into view. The fabric tore free. I pushed up from my seat, but before I could move further, the plane bucked savagely. My body lifted off the seat and slammed into the ceiling before crashing back down. Agony shot through my bones, my vision swimming with darkness.

The tip slices through the air… but she disappears in a blast of light just when it should have sliced through her neck. More bricks fall from the ceiling, crushing vines and sending dust funneling down the corridor, blurring my line of sight. Overhead, the dust clears, and at least a dozen silver dragons pierce the sunset, sending sprays of their silver fire into the vines choking the castle. The sky is turning a deep violet against strips of deep gold and orange. I have minutes to save her.

Last of all, Kash and I step out, and I pull my hood over my head to hide myself as much as I can. Only years of good breeding keep my jaw from dropping as I look up into the sky at Kar Castle. Nestled between two mountains and made of the same stone, it looks more like another peak than something people actually built. Pointed, near-black towers jab up at perfect angles, dusted with their own powdery coating of snow. Unless there’s much more of the castle behind the front, it’s much narrower than our castle, but it’s easily the tallest building I’ve ever seen, scraping the very sky.

If a bunch of old vultures from the Table of Dons can shove a new wife into my life without my consent? Who even created that damned Table by the way? I guess It’s time I end them. “Boss, we’re pulling into Castillo Romano,” Sky said, his voice cutting through the tense silence. I straightened, smoothing my tie and jacket. If I was meeting this woman, I’d do it looking like the king I was. The convoy swept through the iron gates, tires crunching on gravel, and halted at the castle’s grand entrance. Sky hopped out, his lanky frame moving fast and hair flopping over his forehead as he bowed and opened my door.
