When Taheem had yanked her from the car and into the house from the back door, she had expected to be shoved into a dark cell, with damp cold floors and mice and lizards and crawling insects for companion. She had expected to be locked up with no blanket for warmth and given stale bread to eat and water to drink. So when he had led her upstairs and into this room, she had stood rooted and scared, wrapping her arms around her body and eyeing him from the corner of her eyes. What was he going to do?

Thunder snapped and pushed the door open with sheer force. Ember had no choice but to move aside. Her ex-lover strolled inside as if he hadn't just broken in. “What the hell—” Thunder looked over at Icen and froze on his tracks as he found him lounging shirtless and drinking a diet coke on the couch. Then his attention went to the open buttons on her shirt. Nope, things aren't what they seem to be. She wanted to clarify, but she didn't bother, perhaps because he had drawn his own conclusion.

Althea focused on the heat deep inside of her and used what little magic she possessed to form a barrier around it. She fought the urge to stomp her feet or rub her hands together. Instead, she filled her lungs with frigid air and expelled it in a huff. Beside her, Destroyer uncurled, stood, stretched and then resituated his huge body around her feet and knees. “You should leave me. You will die if you stay here. We can not wait much longer for him to rescue us,” she whispered, but the wolf simply opened one insulted blue eye and let out a sigh that sent the snow in front of his mouth flying wildly around them.

I almost puke all over the beautiful dessert table. In a swift movement, I held his hand, gripping me closely to him, and summoned my powers to the tips of my fingers. I have the power to create a storm; as such, I can control lighting at will, just like Thor, the god of thunder. I shocked his hands, and he grunted, stepping back from me. When I saw him trying to pounce back, I lifted my hand, and the lightning sparks danced between my fingers... "Don't you dare!" I threatened, and his eyes flashed with the ones of his wolf. Of course, a commotion broke out, and immediately, Al and Dad were beside me.

“Tell me, have you attended Professor Draven’s combat class yet?” I groan. “Unfortunately.” Professor Starling laughs. I smile despite myself. For a while, we simply walk. The academy slowly waking around us. Students gathering and bondeds stretching. The smell of breakfast drifting through the air. Gods, the place almost feels normal. Then a massive shadow passes overhead. I look up. A gryphon. Its rider laughing as they dive through the clouds. Further away, an Ironclad dragon releases a thunderous roar that shakes the ground beneath my feet. Students barely react.

The Silver Peaks, once a theater of fire and shadow, were now covered in a layer of fine, iridescent frost that shimmered like crushed diamonds under the first rays of the dawn. Lyra Thorne stood in the center of the crater, her tattered shadow-silk gown fluttering in the biting wind. She held Kaelen tightly against her chest. The boy was still, his eyes no longer glowing white, but his breathing was shallow, his small body vibrating with the aftershocks of the celestial possession.
