Aldric’s head snapped up, his sharp eyes darting toward the crumbling ceiling, the deep cracks widening as dust rained down in thick clouds. "The castle is failing," he said grimly. Briane jerked back from Lyra, her expression shifting to something close to alarm. "The magic holding this place together - it’s breaking apart." Kane barely heard them. His world had narrowed to Lyra, to the faint, fragile rhythm of her breathing. But Aldric’s voice cut through the haze. "Kane," he said sharply. "We have to move. If the castle collapses, we won’t be able to get out."

Technically, as long as we didn’t pass him, the Second Guardian hadn’t failed in his duty.
