The puzzles were piling up. The archway led into an open quadrangle surrounded on all sides by the structure of the castle itself. It was imposing, surging upwards in two levels of stone. Unlike the outer wall of the castle, the inner walls had large windows that opened into the quadrangle. Directly opposite them at the end of that seemingly endless courtyard was a huge door of weathered oak. A stone path led straight to it. Samuel set off down the path without a backward glance and Red scrambled behind him struggling to keep up.

As I entered the first hallway, I saw why. They were still standing outside the walls when suddenly the main gate of the castle lifted on its own. It was a gigantic iron gate with designs of three-headed dragons.

Who would go against the Don? When they pulled me out of the car and into the Mendoza household, I was in tears. But through the blur of it all, I saw a castle. Now, standing here, I see the same grandeur—the walls of the servants’ quarters are painted in the brightest yellow. At every corner, flowers bloom against the walls. Art pieces are hung at even intervals, and the ceiling is so high… painted white with lilies or something. I leave the hall and step onto a white staircase. I glance left and right—terrified of what I might find at every turn. Then I reach another floor. Colorful couches spread across the space, and a garden is beyond the open balcony. Parrots flutter in from outside—

He grabbed my wrist and led me inside. As we stepped into the castle, I was immediately struck by the stark contrast between the outside and the inside. While the exterior had appeared dark and imposing, the interior was adorned with luxurious touches and furnishings. The halls were lined with richly upholstered walls, and ornate crystal chandeliers hung from the ceilings, casting a warm glow over the space. The carpet was soft and plush beneath my feet, and the air was filled with the scent of burning candles and exotic perfumes. It was beautiful inside out.

His hands slid down my arm and he grabbed my hand. Without a word, he turned around and walked back up to the house with me tugging behind him. The inside of the castle was stone walls with weapons displayed around every corner. Big statues stood placed neatly and in-between were knight armors holding swords.
