His Possession

His Possession

It was now staring at Pandora intently, as if one small movement from her was a bullfighter's red cloth to lure the bull. Pandora wanted to stay silent, but she couldn't prevent every out-of-control action. Slowly inching away, she caught the attention of Kingston's pet. A cheetah. A member of the cat family that hunts prey with speed. Without settling or herding. And has the outline of a tiger but not the roar of a lion. That's why, even though it purrs in a cute way, the cheetah is as terrifying as it looks. "What do you want?"

Horror Nights

Horror Nights

The fog in Blackwood Glen had a habit of swallowing sounds, turning the evening into a claustrophobic dampness that clung to my jacket. I had been hiking the lower trails when I found it: a sleek, charcoal-colored cat with eyes like burning sulfur. It wasn’t meowing; it was simply sitting on a moss-covered stump, watching me with an intelligence that felt uncomfortably human. Around its neck was a delicate silver collar with a nameplate: Midnight. Below the name was an address just a mile down the trail.

HUNTED

HUNTED

I was quick to hire the best investigators money could buy to find him. It took them three days to find him. Might have been less if I had found the patched letter on the floor earlier. Matteo Leone. Pretty boy had a pretty name. He was twenty three years old. There was nothing much on him, except his family and his hidden hobbies. He was bisexual. The folder contained rumors that suggested he was living under his father's thumb. I couldn't fathom how any father could treat their own child like hazardous dirt. So, I had searched for more.

Blood King

Blood King

One of the hunters had a set of daggers and thought to go after Anna and fight hand to hand with the same weapon. Kat chuckled as two of the hunters pulled out more stakes and held them up to chase after her. "What! You retards run out of weapon ideas!" Belle groaned and shook her head. Trust Kat to say something....extremely....stupid! Sure enough, she ended up with more than she could chew. Kaitlyn squeaked as two hunters advanced to her.

The Pack's Emissary

The Pack's Emissary

“She’s survived worse.” “Hmm,” was an agreement hummed through his nose, his attention on something rustling within the folds of a semi-collapsed tarpaulin. Lyric drew closer to the rustling tarpaulin, starting to lean over spotting a glimpse of dark fur, thinking that someone’s pet kitten had been left behind. “Here kitty, kitty.” “Kitty-kitty?” Niarthen wondered. “Cat,” she said. “You know, meow, long tail, purrs. Domesticated house animal. Pet.”

My Tormentor

My Tormentor

After few moments of searching her gaze stopped at the only tree there in the corner near the boundary wall. She walked near it and saw a little kitten trying to hide itself in the trunk of the tree not wanting to get wet in the rain. Isabella cooed watching the little fluffy kitten meowing and trying to hide in the trunk of the tree. She saw here and there and noticed there is no place the kitten can hide itself besides it is so cute and fluffy to let go.

To Avenge My Ex, I Married A Tycoon

To Avenge My Ex, I Married A Tycoon

Luna was in her father's arms and Kater, who had a head full of braids, sat beside her, looking at Nathan sincerely. Then, Luna asked, "Daddy, does Kater look like a wolf?" Nathan frowned and glanced at Kater, who had braids all over his head, before he gave an honest reply. "No." Hearing this, Luna pouted and said, "You're lying, Daddy. Grandma said that Kater is a Siberian sled wolf!' Nathan stole a glance at Connie, wondering what trick Luna had up her sleeve. However, since Connie already said that Kater looked like a wolf, he couldn't say otherwise. Hence, Nathan hurriedly nodded and replied, "Yes, Grandma is right."

Wolfe Ranch

Wolfe Ranch

I saw that Preston’s clothes were still here so he was still back home on the territory. I reached out and took Cat’s hand in mine before we started to walk back to the main house. Our walk was quiet as we looked around and listened for movement just in case there was anything moving in the darkness. There was nothing to pay attention to. The cat, Blinks, was hunting mice and the cattle were resting in their designated spots with the dogs watching over them.

Frequently Asked Questions

I get a kick out of how many little tricks setters can hide behind a simple phrase like 'catch sight of'. In my experience the most common solutions are short and punchy: 'ESPY' (4), 'SEE' (3), 'SPOT' (4) and the slightly more old‑fashioned 'DESCRY' (6). Setters lean on these because each one has neat cryptic hooks — homophones, double definitions, hidden words, and even &lit or cryptic definition surfaces that let the clue read like natural English. Once you know the usual suspects, you start spotting pattern matches in clue wordplay much faster.

If you want practical hints to look for, think in terms of device classes. A straightforward double definition is super common: something like "Spot: catch sight of or blemish (4)" works because 'spot' can mean both to see and to stain. Homophone tricks are lovely for 'see' — a clue that winks with a question mark and mentions the sea or water often yields SEE (sounds like 'sea'). Hidden indicators like 'in', 'among', 'inside' or casual surface phrases such as 'in the crowd' can hide answers across word boundaries, so always scan contiguous letters if the enumeration fits.

Then there's the vocabulary angle: 'ESPY' and 'DESCRY' appear a lot, and each invites different wordplay. 'ESPY' might be clued with a jokey surface about espionage or spying, or simply as the definition and tucked into a cryptic charade. 'DESCRY' can be clued via literal components ('de-' prefix plus 'scry' vibes) or by a more elegant surface that suggests making out or discerning something at a distance. Other variants like 'GLIMPSE' (7) or 'NOTICE' (6) show up when setters want a longer entry — those often come with container or anagram constructions.

My favorite solving tip: look at punctuation and tense. A question mark often signals a pun or homophone; a conversational surface often hides a hidden word with 'in' or 'among'; and if the clue reads like a natural phrase, consider a double definition. When you get used to these rhythms, 'catch sight of' clues become instantly recognizable and even fun to parse — I still grin when I spot a clever misdirection that leads to 'espy'.
