Though her stories sounded fake, I still loved to listen to them all.

Elian stared at it in silence. Back home, the moon never felt like this. It had always been something gentle. Something distant. Something beautiful. Here… It felt like a countdown. His fingers curled slightly. Mother would have finished preparing dinner by now… The thought came uninvited. Soft. Painful. He could almost see it—the small wooden table, the dim firelight, the familiar scent of herbs lingering in the air. His mother moving quietly between tasks, his sister talking too much, laughing too loudly…

I take in a calming breath as I close my eyes, listening to the sound of her soothing voice, feeling it calming me. The day passes slowly, feeling like it would never end. The next morning I feel myself being shaken awake, not remembering falling asleep. "Goodmorning princess," Father says as I slowly sit up, rubbing my eyes. "It's over?" I look at my hands, not feeling the effects of the blood moon anymore. "Yes, it's all over." Father wake mother, then BJ. "That wasn't so bad was it Mr badass." Father smirk at BJ, handing him a pair of shorts.
