If I paused, I knew that I would break down, and I could not afford that, so I simply kept moving. Hours passed, and the sun began to set, standing higher in the sky. That was the first time I got a perception of the time and realized that I had not eaten just yet. With that knowledge in my head, I paused briefly to eat some wild berries I found along the way, returning some of my energy, just enough to keep going. The forest was my friend, its old, aged trees telling me tales of those who had walked these paths before me. I felt a strange sense of community with the creatures of the wild, as if they understood the things that were going on in my mind.

And every night, I heard howls in the distance: rogues, wild animals, or worse. But I kept moving north. Always north. The compass became my lifeline, and my mother’s journal my constant companion. Each night, new instructions appeared on its pages: how to start a fire without matches when mine ran out, which plants were safe to eat, how to hide my scent trail from pursuing wolves. You’re doing well, my brave girl,* the journal read on the third night. But your body is reaching its limits. Tomorrow, you’ll need to rest. There’s a safe place ahead: a clearing with a freshwater spring. Stop there.

The mist curled low between the trees, it was foggy, swallowing the world in silence. Irvine tried to breathe it in, let the calm settle her, but something about the woods made her restless. Every rustle, every snap of a twig, they rang louder than it should. Her ears caught sounds farther away than possible: the flutter of birds high inthe sky, the tiny footsteps of a rabbit beneath roots. Her senses were sharper, too sharp. Garrick dismounted first, tying his harnesses to a branch with practiced ease. “The tracks will be fresher deeper in,” he murmured, his tone low but hungry. “Stay close.”

Wyatt says through his teeth. I sit back in my seat, staring out the windshield at the passing cars and trees. We're almost home. But I'm not sure I can even call it that anymore. I still don’t feel like eating, but I’m shaky and tired as it is, weakening myself even more by refusing food won’t do me anyone any good either. I could never feel safe here. My ears and nose were on alert the entire time for any wolf that could possibly spot me. Luckily, I sensed none. I had enough time to quickly catch my prey and hurriedly return. My back rested against the tree, and my body quivered nervously as my eyes closed and my nose raised, sniffing through the air for any small creature lurking by. My eyes peeled open, and my body jumped, sensing a rabbit nearby. I could be lucky enough to find its burrow. I trotted through the forest. My heart leaped with joy, and I darted between the bushes. I saw food: a fat brown rabbit having its breakfast of grasses. It was a great time to slowly sneak up on it. I glued my eyes to it

“Mary, do you think it appropriate to skull the living because of the lack of understanding?” The woman shook her head, as she glared at the man who had spoken to her. “I don’t care about the circumstances James, but things need to be known.” She raised her finger towards Ava. “She needs to know how much of a danger she is to come.” Next to Ava, she felt another presence making their way towards her. She turned and saw a Native man, who came and leaned next to her. “Spirit Walker, a dark dragon has just entered the area.” He pointed towards the area behind him. “Coming this way.”

"Matt! No! Please, Matt, don't! This isn't you... this isn't who you are!" Her voice, raw with terror, cracked on the last words, which echoed loudly through the forest. She remembered the Matt she knew: the man who held her hand gently, who laughed softly at her jokes, whose eyes held nothing but warmth and affection. This creature before her, eyes blazing with a hellish light, fangs bared in a snarl, was a grotesque parody of that man. The transformation was complete, a horrifying metamorphosis from the man she loved to a savage beast. Ella slowly walks toward Matt. Everyone around is alert. Everyone is in position. One wrong step from her and one wrong move from Matt, all their hard work

Then he turned, eyes already gold, the shift beginning before he even made it outside. --- VIII.
