Hate Me, Desire Me
Alona’s voice cut through the static in my earpiece.
“I’m fine,” I said, though my arm throbbed from where I’d slammed into the column. “Proceeding to the west wing.”
The west wing was a hellscape of mangled bodies and bloodstained floors, an unholy mix of chaos and carnage that clung to the air like a curse. Smoke billowed in thick, suffocating clouds, burning my throat and stinging my eyes with each inhale. Flames licked the edges of shattered doorways, their flickering light casting grotesque shadows across the marble walls. The faint scent of burning wood and flesh coiled into my nostrils, making my stomach churn, but I forced it down.
