Maybe a souvenir?” Leslie asked. “Kid, these god statures aren’t for decorations and children touch things they shouldn’t. Let’s stick with the papers that won’t leave the temple.” I instructed and picked up a charm.

As we drove through the narrow streets, I couldn’t stop looking out the window. Kyoto was nothing like the cities I’d known. It breathed differently—soft, ancient, kind. Wooden houses stood beside glass towers. Cherry blossoms clung stubbornly to branches despite the drizzle. Lanterns flickered quietly in the early evening light. Somewhere in my chest, something eased. The hotel was small and elegant, with warm wood interiors and the faint aroma of incense greeting me at the door. “Welcome, Ms. Thorne,” the receptionist said, smiling. “Your room is ready. We hope you enjoy your stay.”

Haru We landed in Narita International Airport, Tokyo, without a hitch, and after going through customs and immigration, we gathered our luggage and headed out, taking the shuttle to our hotel right in the heart of Shinjuku, where we’d be staying for two days before taking a bullet train to Kyoto, where we’d spend another two days. After that, it’d be a domestic flight over to Sapporo in Hokkaido, where we’d then take a train to a remote little town called Aoi, where we’d stay with Uncle Jin for seven days. After that, we’d fly over to Jeju Island and then Seoul in South Korea, where we’d spend the remaining days exploring the cities and what they had to offer before heading back home.

Kyoto inquired, his tone gentle and welcoming. I hesitated for a moment, unsure how to express my feelings. “It was okay, but a bit uncomfortable,” I replied, trying to convey my mixed emotions. Mr. Kyoto nodded understandingly, his eyes reflecting empathy. “I understand. It can take some time to adjust to a new place. We want you to feel comfortable and at home here.” His words reassured me, and I felt a wave of gratitude towards him. “Thank you, Mr. Kyoto.
