Determination settled on his face.
Charlie was in his fifties, perpetually tired, and had the emotional range of a man who had seen too much and cared too little. He marched straight toward Derek’s booth.
“Oh no,” I whispered.
“Oh yes,” Mia whispered back, grinning and settling in for the show.
Charlie stopped in front of Derek and cleared his throat. Nothing. I nearly choked.
“I’m Charlie. I run this place.”
Mia actually did choke — on a laugh.
Derek finally looked up, most likely because he heard us. “Derek Blackwell,” he said, taking pity on our manager.
