Then came the hard part—getting Lisa there.
I’d cornered Clara earlier and pleaded with her. Begged her. I’d never lowered myself that far before, but for Lisa, I would. Clara had her doubts, but after repeated reassurances that it had nothing to do with Lilian, that it was just dinner—just me trying to make things right—she reluctantly agreed.
“I’ll try,” she’d said. “But she might not come.”
“She has to,” I whispered to myself. “Please, just come.”
I stood in the middle of the garden, dressed in all black, holding a single red rose freshly plucked from the far end of the estate’s grounds. My fingers clenched around the stem as I paced anxiously, praying this worked.
