I watched the driver's door open and a figure step out into the rain without hesitating. He didn't run. He walked, steadily, through the downpour, and tapped twice on my window. I looked at Chris through the rain streaked glass for a long moment. His jacket was already dark with water across the shoulders. He didn't look annoyed or self conscious or like he was waiting for credit. He just looked at me, the same way he had looked at the floor in the gala corridor, like he had somewhere to be and had decided, without making a production of it, that this was it.

The warriors released him, and he crumpled to the stage. Chris—the one who had held me back—and I rushed forward. I barely noticed the crowd anymore. Some were crying. Others stood in stunned silence, faces full of guilt and regret. But I didn’t care. All I cared about was Xavier. I dropped to my knees beside him.
