Sumire followed the young man through her questioning gaze, wondering who called him this late. Sumire stood up and was about to follow him when Narco suddenly stopped her. A big ribboned box was handed to her. "Belated Happy Birthday," he greeted her with a playful smile. "Thank you." She smiled genuinely but that beautiful smile plastered on her lips quickly faded when she accepted the present and fell on the deck at the same time due to the heavy weight of the box. 'What the hell is in this box?' She cussed in her mind. "Oops! My bad." Narco insincerely apologizes. Sumire thought he was going to help her lift the box but the scalawag left her speechless with his hands crossed on the back

One soft click. The picture came out tasteful but teasing, enough to make him grin. She smiled, selected Darren’s name, hit send. Then tossed her phone onto the bed and poured herself a glass of cheap red wine. Next week, she'd have her bags packed, ready to head to Maysville, the small town she'd grown up in for Christmas. Her holiday plan was just perfect! Her playlist hummed to life; jazzy, lazy Christmas tunes filling the air. For the first time all day, her shoulders relaxed. She even started humming along, thinking about what tomorrow morning would look like. Morning pancakes, bad movies, Darren’s laugh…

“This time of year, I like all the Christmas ones. The gushier the better.” “Gushy…” It wasn’t a question, but she answered anyway. “You know… The happy cry ones. Heck, I even tear up when the Grinch’s heart grows at the end of that little cartoon.” She sighed. “But to be fair, I’ve been known to get teary at a heart-tugging commercial at Christmas time.” “Yeah… I don’t do Christmas.” “So, I’ve noticed,” she said, tipping her head to one side to study him. If anything, his features had tightened, his eyes had grown darker. Just the mention of the holiday had been enough to close him up tight. And still, Sparkle couldn’t resist trying to reach him.

Sophie stood in the middle wearing reindeer antlers and the biggest smile. "There you are! Dad's getting the tree. We have so much to do." The front door opened and Derek and Jason carried in the biggest Christmas tree I'd ever seen. Derek's eyes found mine across the room and held for just a second. Long enough that my coffee mug suddenly felt too hot. "Morning, Maya," he said, voice still rough. "Morning."

He was tall, really tall for a Santa Claus, that I had to tilt my head back to meet his eyes—oh, his eyes. They were an icy gray that seemed to bare my soul, uncovering every hidden secret before his eyes. I felt a cold shiver run down my spine, but I couldn't tell if it was from the cold or the way those eyes made me feel, something so distinct yet I couldn't put my hands on it. “Merry Christmas,” he murmured, his deep baritone causing my heart to thrum so loudly in my chest I could only stand there and gawk like a damn fool.

I curled up with Chris in his bed as we watched a movie. He’s been worried about me over the past week, which I feel bad about. I hate worrying everyone. Chris surprised me with a home-cooked dinner and a movie; A Journey Back to Christmas, my favorite Christmas movie ever. I sighed as we watched, “What’s wrong?” Chris asked; I shook my head, but Chris was not about to take that for an answer. He paused the movie and straightened up, waiting for me to talk to him.

Nicholas “Merry Christmas!” shouted a smiling street performer, handing out small candy canes. “No, thank you,” Nicholas Kerstman said, shaking his head as he walked past. “But it's Christmas time! Take one,” the performer urged. “Embrace the season.” Nicholas sighed. Why did Christmas have to come every year? “Sure. Why not?” Nicholas said with a shrug as he took the candy cane into his hand. When he thought the street performer couldn't see him, he threw the candy cane into the nearest trashcan.
