Trick "Mom, are you sure it's okay for us to break tradition?" Riley asks, her eyes wide as she gazes at the Christmas tree box sitting in my apartment. "What's normal tradition?" I ask, opening the box up with my knife. Hadley smiles at her daughter. "Normally we wait until December 10th, we put on A Christmas Story, and we decorate while watching the movie play over and over again." "It's only a few days before the tenth," I look at my phone. "Today's the fifth, and if you want to watch the movie, I'm sure it's on Netflix. Why don't you go look, Sprite."

My name was Giselle Sutton, and I had carried myself with a demure and refined demeanor ever since I was a child. No one knew the truth—that I desperately lusted after men. Although I was the campus belle, I only started dating my first boyfriend, Blake Finch, when I was about to graduate because of my parents' strict rules. The atmosphere during Christmas Eve was perfect. Blake brought me back to his rented apartment, wanting to give me an unforgettable first time. I pretended to be reserved, but in reality, I was already brimming with impatience.

When I set him down on his feet, I turned to grab their school bags and lunchboxes when he spoke. “Is it true you hate Christmas mommy, is that why we never celebrate and you won't let us be in the recital?,” I turned sharply at that, staring wide eyed down at him before slowly crouching to his level and placing both my hands on his shoulders. “Who on earth told you that?,” he only shrugged in response to my question. “Sweetie, some people choose not to celebrate certain holidays but it doesn't mean they hate it,” I tried to explain in a gentle tone, but that was a lie.

Killian immediately shrugged out of his jacket and draped it around her shoulders, and she pulled it tight around herself, breathing in his scent. "I loved Christmas here," she said, her voice barely above a whisper. "It was—they made it so special. So magical. Mrs Morales would start decorating the day after Thanksgiving. She had made us all hot chocolate and put on Christmas music–Mary's Boy Child by Bonney M precisely, and we'd spend the whole day turning the house into something out of a Hallmark movie. And Mr Morales, he'd read us the Christmas story every single night in December, counting down until the actual day. And Daryl would—" She couldn't finish. "I hated the smell of Christmas

I thought I was beginning to understand what my mom was always saying about it being better to give than receive. “Cadence! Your pajamas are upstairs in your room,” my mom said, as if she’d just realized what my sister was wearing. “Oh, that’s okay,” Cadence protested. Perhaps she didn’t want to wear her Christmas jammies in front of her coworker. “Now, come on Cadence. You know the rules. Christmas jammies for presents!” my mom insisted, and I thought back to that movie, A Christmas Story, where Ralphie has to put on those rabbit pajamas. I knew Cadence’s were the same as mine, though, red and green with reindeer heads. They weren’t so bad.

“Apparently, I can’t leave my restaurant unattended without chaos breaking loose.” He chuckled. “That’s because you run a tight ship.” She softened. “Maybe. But I don’t regret it. I’m glad we came home for Christmas. I needed that time.” “Me too!” Laya chimed in before yawning so wide her eyes watered. “Best Christmas ever.” She rubbed her face. “Daddy, can you tell me a bedtime story again tonight? The one about the brave princess?” Jordan nodded instantly. “Of course I can. Bath and PJs first, then Momma will bring you the phone. And tonight, that princess might get a dragon.”
